Do you like to explore science, solve problems and use technology? If you do, then STEM Academy is the perfect place for you! Join us for an engaging session of exploring many different STEM Challenges both engineering and technology through hands-on investigations. Our session will include high interest materials such as Legos, K’NEX, Little Bits, and Ozobots! Each session will offer different activities and not repeat 2020 and 2021 topics.
 
Course Number:  2005.301        STEM Robotics Camp for Ages 7, 8, 9        Fee: $115

The great minds at LEGO have provided the tools and means for us to use their fun kits to do more advanced STEM and computer science. LEGO WeDo and LEGO Mindstorms are a great way for students to explore a different side of robotics that includes engineering through interesting building challenges, programming, and innovative thinking with high interest materials.
This session will offer different challenges from our Spring 2021 Session.

Course No:  2006.323   Ozobot Go For The Gold Virtual Advanced Level
Date: July 26 to July 28       Time: 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.     Ages: 8 – 14     Fee: $30
For participants who have participated in our Winter Beginner Level Sessions and Summer 2021 Beginner Level. Participants must use their Ozobot from the Winter Programs. This program
will be led by an experienced STEM educator Kerry O’Sullivan
 
Course Number: 2006.328    STEM Computer Coding, Game Design and More
Date: August 2 to 6               Time: 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.   Ages: 9-14         Fee: $50
In this course, participants will explore the wonderful world of coding and video game design. Students will learn key concepts of coding on Google CS First and use block coding platform to create their own video games. Participants will share their video games with friends and family and continue adding to them after the program is over. Come put your problem-solving
skills to the test and show your creativity. No previous experience is required!
There is no additional materials kit required for this program.
This program will be led by Laura Juarez.
 
2021  Fall/Winter Programs

VEX IQ Robotics Competition Team 
Course NO: 2005.401     Ages 10-13
Meeting Times: Saturdays 9 – 12 
Location: Spanish Community of Wallingford CT STEM Academy 284 Washington Street
Join us for another successful season of our VEX IQ robotics competition team. Let’s go to World Championships again! Students can rejoin from the previous year, but we also welcome new faces. No experience necessary. This program is high commitment and high reward. It encourages teamwork, problem solving, and leadership skills. The students will be using the VEX IQ robotics system to learn the basics of building a  robot, coding and other STEM applications.
Fee: $350 includes all meetings, t-shirt for participants and registration fees for all scrimmages and State Competition

All meetings are 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays. Meeting dates are as follows:

Friday Night Science Fun   Ages 8-12    Time:  6:00 – 7:00 p.m.     Cost:  $15 per session

There’s nothing like some science to kick off the weekend! Friday programs will involve exciting projects for students to burn off some of that built up energy from the week. Activities will include exciting and engaging STEM labs for kids to collaborate on. If inclement weather, program will be moved to Wallingford Park and Rec STEM Room.

Participants will engage in a fun hands-on chemistry experiment. 
Course No:    2005.427  Friday, October 8 - Roller Coasters
Participants will envision and design a paper roller coaster.
Course No:    2005.428  Friday, October 15  - Tallest Tower Challenge
Participants will try to build the tallest tower out of household materials. 
Course No:    2005.429  Friday, October 22  - Make and Take STEM
Participants will engage in a surprise STEM engineering challenge.
Course No:    2005.430  Friday, November 5 – Water Bottle Toss Challenge
Students will test a variety of bottles by filling them with water and tossing / flipping them to determine which bottle of theirs has the highest success rate. 
Course No:    2005.431  Friday, November 12 – Fidget Spinner Challenge
Students will develop by conducting experiments on a spinning technique that they develop with a team. Participants will be looking into human error, spin speed, and will be recording and comparing spin times.
Course No:    2005.432  Friday, November 19 – Race Car Challenge
Participants will create race cars using everything from straws, peppermints and K’NEX.
Course No:    2005.433  Friday, December  3 – Basketball Hoop Challenge
Participants will create a mini-basketball game out of household materials.

Explore a different side of STEM with this new program.  As junior chemists, students will study the substances that make up matter—everything that takes up space in the universe. They also study the changes that take place when substances are combined. These changes are called chemical reactions.  Participants who join will have the chance to see how the properties of substances can make for exciting projects that might include chemical testing and allergy free food chemistry and different from the Winter 2020 program.

This program is designed for participants who would like a rich introduction to robotics and are not able to make a full Saturday commitment required for our VEX IQ Robotics Team.  This program encourages critical thinking, problem solving, and communication.  Participants will be using Lego Mindstorms EV3 and VEX Robotics to learn the basics of building a robot, coding and related STEM applications.   Instructors will adjust program instruction to meet the needs of all participants.

It’s Fall! The sun is shining and the leaves are falling! In this program, participants will get outside and learn about various plants and animals that inhabit the world around them. Participants will also collect, observe and identify plants, rocks and minerals. Come on out and see what nature has to offer!  New topics will be introduced

Course Number 2006.420            3D Printing with Blocks CAD      Ages 9 - 14             Fee: $40
Wednesdays: 11/6, 11/13, 11/20, 12/4             Time 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Online
Interested in 3D Printing?  Blocks CAD is a cloud based 3D modeling tool that encourages users to learn math, computational thinking and coding concepts through visualization and designing models to be 3D printed. Each participant will receive one 3D printed model at the end of this program.  Please make sure that your registration includes a current email address and contact phone number.  Please make sure that your registration includes a current mailing address (including town/city and zip code) so we can mail your child their 3D creation.  Maximum of 10 participants.  Program will be shared prior to the start date.

Course Number 2006.421             Block Coding (NEW Program)             Ages 8 - 14             Fee: $30
Saturdays: 10/16, 10/23, 11/6        Time: 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Online
Participants will code virtually using platforms such as Snap!, Code.org  and Ucode.  Using these programs, participants will create designs, control robots and more.

Course Number 2006.131            Python Coding           Ages 10 - 15               Fee: $30
Thursdays: 1/13, 1/20, 1/27          Time: 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. 
Location: Online
Python coding will provide participants with an experience of creating a project, test the project, making revisions and retesting the project. Come join us for this engaging form of coding.

In 3...2...1...BLAST OFF! In this STEM program, students will act as true NASA employees as they investigate various types of rockets.  Participants will have the opportunity to build small rockets from household materials that they can launch at home, eventually building up to a well-designed rocket that will be launched from our own high pressure air compressor.  Get ready to blast off with this exciting program!
